On Sunday August 3rd at North Central College in Naperville, IL the National Amateur Baseball Federation held the Championship game of the 2025 Charles Blackburn Major Division World Series. The visiting team would be the Berea Blue Sox from Berea, OH while the Beecher Muskies were the home team.
Starting on the mound for the Muskies was right hander Zack Millsap. The Muskie's closer was pushed into a starting role after the Muskie pitching staff had been taxed heavily through three games between Friday night and Saturday night. After both starters got out of jams In the first inning, the first three innings of the game would be scoreless. Then, in the top of the fourth inning the Blue Sox would get on the board with an RBI single from their center fielder Brady Maciak then another RBI single from shortstop Jackson Homage. In the bottom of the fourth the Muskies would answer with a walk and stolen base by right fielder Andy Gaytan. Then an RBI single from catcher Marty Coyle drove in the run. In the top of the fifth, the Blue Sox would get a clutch 2 RBI triple from catcher Johnny Nola. Two more RBI singles in the inning by the Blue Sox would make the game 6-1. The Muskies though would not lose hope. After having pitchers Alex Rodriquez and Camden Kearney struggle in the fifth, right hander Byrce Shafer would shut down the Blue Sox for a few innings. With Shafer keeping the Blue Sox in check, the Muskie bats would stage a comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning. A bases loaded 2 RBI single by left fielder AJ Lee, a sacrifice fly to left field by shortstop Quintin Alexander, and another run scoring single would have the Muskies back in the game 6-5 going into the seventh inning. After scoring one in the bottom of the seventh on a fielder’s choice from contact by Quintin Alexander, Shafer would get another shutdown inning in the eighth. With the game tied 6-6 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Beecher Muskies bats would prove to the crowd they could be champions. In has first at bat of the Series, Tyler Brody singled to drive home pinch runner Taylor Fuerst. AJ Le then had another RBI hit, a double driving home Andy Gaytan. First baseman Pat Carmody then drove home Brody and Le to make the score 10-6.
In the top of the ninth, Shafer would get the call to stay in and finish the game. After getting two out and two runners on, Shafer suffered a hamstring injury. He surrendered two base hits and could not continue. Muskie Manager Fred LeSage would go back to the bullpen to bring in left hander Ben Carlile, needing one out to win the championship. Carlile inherited a 2-0 count on the batter at the time of Shafer's injury and ended up surrendering a walk. With the bases loaded and two outs, Blue Sox catcher Johnny Nola hit a ball down the right field line. With right fielder Any Gaytan running hard into foul territory, the Muskie fans and players held their breath, and Gaytan would make the catch sliding into the fence! MUSKIES WIN! After the game, NABF's individual awards were given for the tournament. Catcher Marty Coyle and pitcher Bryce Shafer were named co-MVPs. AJ Le was World Series batting champion as he went 12 for 22 with 12 RBI’s.
