Muskies Top Pumas 12-4

Andy Gaytan collected four hits in five at bats, as the Muskies defeated the New Lenox Pumas 12-4 on Tuesday at Diamond Point Park in Bourbonnais.  Gaytan tripled in the seventh inning, doubled in the eighth inning, singled in the third inning, and singled in the fifth inning.  Muskie starter Brooks McDowell struck out 10 batters on the day. The hurler also gave up eight hits and four runs over six and one-third innings while walking five.

 

A wild pitch put New Lenox Pumas on the board in the top of the first.  Shortstop Taylor Fuerst singled to center to drive in a run and tie the game at one in the bottom of the second.  Muskies took the lead in the bottom of the third.  Marty Coyle to hit into a fielder's choice driving in Zac Ruzich to give the Muskies the lead, 2-1.  New Lenox recaptured the lead, 3-2, in the top of the fifth with two runs off McDowell.  They scored again with one out in the seventh to go up 4-2.  Josh Sutker came on in relief of McDowell with runners on the corners and one out and struck out two batters to stop the Puma rally.

 

In the bottom of the seventh Gaytan's triple drove in Fuerst and AJ Le to tie the game at 4.  The Muskies flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the eighth, scoring eight runs on four hits to take the lead, 12-4. The biggest blow in the inning was a bloop single by Zac Ruzich that drove in two.

 

Jack Callejo earned the win for Muskies. The reliever allowed no hits and no runs in his one inning of work, striking out two and walking one. Anthony Valenza took the loss for New Lenox Pumas. The hurler went one inning, surrendering five runs on three hits, striking out one and walking one. Eickhorst started the game for New Lenox Pumas. The starter gave up five hits and two runs (one earned) over four innings, striking out one and walking one.  The Muskies' Camden Kearney (pictured above left) struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the win for Callejo.

 

Beecher had 12 hits in the game. Fuerst, Kearney, and Ruzich each collected multiple hits for Muskies.  Beecher also collected six walks on the night and turned two double plays.  

 

The Muskies improved to 6-1 on the season and 4-0 in Chicago Suburban Baseball League play.  On Thursday the Muskies host the Lake County Corndogs in a CSBL game at 7 PM at Gouwens Park in South Holland.
